Hans is an internationally recognised expert in heat transfer and President of HTRI, with experience spanning academia, industry, and applied research. His work focuses on real engineering systems, particularly fouling, fouling mitigation, and the lifecycle performance of heat exchangers. Known for technical rigour, dry German humour, and a strong belief that boundary conditions matter, he advocates realistic modelling and closer academia–industry collaboration.
Hans holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Surrey, where he studied under Professor Hans Müller-Steinhagen. He joined HTRI in 2000. His research addresses how heat exchangers perform once they foul—an unavoidable but manageable reality—emphasising long-term efficiency over idealised assumptions.
A calm and inclusive leader, Hans encourages clarity, debate, and dimensional consistency. Outside work, he is a dedicated family man with passions for travel, photography, cycling, windsurfing, and skiing.
Motto: “Engineering heat transfer for real operating conditions.”
